Scams Awareness Week (25-29 August 2025)
In conjunction to the Scams Awareness Week (25-29 August 2025), the National Anti-Scams Centre (NASC) introduced the ‘Stop. Check. Protect.’ framework to help people take simple, proactive steps to avoid scams. This approach empowers individuals to feel in control and take necessary action rather than feeling helpless.
Stop.
Always pause before giving out money or personal information. Scammers often create urgency to push you into quick decisions. Take your time, say no to suspicious requests, and trust your instincts if something feels off.
Check.
Make sure the person or organisation you’re dealing with is legitimate. Scammers commonly impersonate trusted organisations. Verify by contacting them directly using official contact details, research opportunities or offers through official sources like ASIC, and get a second opinion from people you trust.
Protect.
If something feels wrong, act quickly. Contact your bank immediately if you’ve lost money or shared sensitive details. Reach out to IDCARE for help in managing identity risks if you have shared your personal information. Report scams to Scamwatch and the impersonated organisation or platform. Change your passwords and monitor your accounts and credit reports for unusual activity.
By adopting this clear and flexible framework, organisations can help consumers take protective actions suited to different scam situations while empowering them to feel confident in responding.
